In front of a work of contemporary art many people may feel a little lost, for are we not supposed to get the work in order to appreciate it?

But if curiosity is what attracts us to an artwork – will getting it just puncture our curiosity?

Perhaps understanding is not so important. Instead of catching up with an artwork, it may be better to be kept somewhat in the dark. To fall a bit behind and leave space for other things – for new insights, ideas and thoughts on how to make changes in the world in a minor or major way.

Fall Behind is the third and last part of the exhibition project A Minor History of Creativity, which over the course of two exhibitions has explored the artistic processes of six contemporary artists. At this final event at Overgaden in Copenhagen the artists are invited to reflect on how their works and practices create meaning. Rather than imitating the seriousness of art historians or curators, Fall Behind encourages experimentation, unconventional strategies and bold gestures. All artists will contribute to the event through presentations or performances.

The event Fall Behind concludes an exhibition project, which questions how exhibitions create meaning and whether this meaning is only to be found in the work itself. A Minor History of Creativity also investigates what lies outside of the artwork: the process that leads to the work and how not understanding an artwork can be both important and meaningful.
